Take a Bite Out of Bullying: How Orthodontic Health Supports Confidence in Kids and Teens

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, a time when we celebrate the benefits of orthodontic treatment and the confidence that comes with having a healthy, beautiful smile. This month also coincides with National Bullying Prevention Month, which is why the American Association of Orthodontists has launched its Bullying Bites campaign for the sixth year in a row.

While we’ll be sharing ways to get involved in the fight against bullying, we also want to discuss how orthodontic health can play a role in boosting kids’ and teens’ confidence, making them less susceptible to things like peer pressure and bullying.

Building Confidence Through Orthodontic Care

For many children and teens, a confident smile can be a powerful tool in navigating the social pressures they face every day. This is because a straight, healthy smile not only improves oral health but also significantly boosts self-esteem.

Dr. Renee Moran and Dr. Caitlin White, our Centennial orthodontists and bite correction experts, have seen firsthand how transforming a smile can transform a life. At Foundations Orthodontics, we go beyond simply straightening teeth. Our holistic approach focuses on each patient’s overall health, including their bite, jaw alignment, and even airway and breathing. By addressing these aspects of orthodontic health, we create beautiful smiles and ensure a solid foundation for lifelong confidence and well-being.

How Confidence Combats Bullying

Studies, including one published in the journal Aggressive Behavior, have shown that individuals with higher self-esteem are less likely to be the victims of bullying. When children and teens feel good about themselves, they’re confident, build stronger peer relationships, and are better able to navigate social situations, both positive and negative.

Another article in the journal American Psychologist reported the results of a large research review that looked at the benefits of self-esteem. The researchers found having high self-esteem was correlated with enhanced mental and physical health, better social relationships, stronger performance at school and work, and reduced antisocial behavior.

Because orthodontic treatment improves the appearance and function of a smile, it often leads to an increase in self-assurance. This newfound confidence empowers kids to stand tall, smile brightly, and stand up for themselves and others.

Building a Strong Foundation for Life

While the focus is often on the cosmetic benefits of braces, clear aligners, and other orthodontic appliances, having straight teeth and a healthy bite supports better oral and overall health. Additionally, by giving our patients functional, stunning smiles, we help them feel empowered, capable, and ready to take on any challenge, including standing up to bullying.

This National Orthodontic Health Month, let's work together to promote confidence, kindness, and the power of a smile.
